Egyptian carrots: sizes, retail bags and year-round supply

Carrots are a staple for every retailer and foodservice operator, and Egyptian supply can cover most of the year. Our export carrots are orange table carrots, washed, graded and packed for retail, wholesale or processing.

Sizes

Carrots are graded by diameter at the shoulder and by length. A common export range is 15–35 mm, with length agreed per programme.

• Retail bags: uniform, medium diameters and straight roots.
• Wholesale: wider diameter ranges.
• Processing: larger roots and less emphasis on shape.

Quality points

• Colour — bright orange, including the core.
• Shape — straight, without forks or cracks.
• No green shoulders.
• Clean, washed surface without soil.
• Firm, crisp texture; no softness.
• Tolerances for broken roots and minor defects.

Packing formats

• 1 kg retail bags — printed consumer bags in master cartons, ready for the shelf.
• 5, 10 or 18 kg bags — for markets and repackers.
• Cartons and jumbo bags — for foodservice and processing.

Keeping carrots crisp

Carrots store well when kept cold and humid. The typical carrying condition is 0 to +1 °C at 95–98% relative humidity. Carrots lose water quickly in dry air, which makes them soft and bendy. Carrots are also sensitive to ethylene, which can cause a bitter taste, so they should not be shipped with ethylene-producing fruit such as apples, pears or ripening mangoes.

Carrots in a vegetable programme

Carrots combine well with other root and bulb vegetables in a programme: potatoes, onions and sweet potatoes. Remember that each product has its own carrying conditions — onions need dry air, sweet potatoes need warmth — so mixed loads need careful planning or separate containers.

For carrots, the specification is about shape and colour; the cold chain is about humidity.
